Lu by Jason Reynolds

What would it be like to be one in a million…and then be treated badly because of it?  This is exactly what happens in Lu, the fourth book in the track series by Jason Reynolds.  In this book, Lucas (Nickname Lu) is the son of two parents who consider him lucky.  Because of what doctors told his mom, it was next to impossible for him to be born, and he came out albino – and is at risk for many illnesses and loss of skin color.  He is a really cool person, complete with chains and swagger. However, name-calling and racial bias he deals with means school is hard for Lu, and the only way to get away from it is track.  Every day, he meets his friends at the track for practice, and has just started a new event – hurdles. It’s a good time, until his very cool dad (Nickname Goose) announces that he and Lu’s mother are having a baby girl.  Lu wanted a boy, and despite the fact that the family now has two miracles, he still wanted someone he could compare his skin to. His problems get deeper when he finds out that his dad sold drugs at a young age, and was traded something very precious for them.  With hurdles constantly getting harder, and the championship coming up, he will have to find his way through old track stars, decade old lies and truths, and fruit deliveries to find not only the right answer to what happened with his dad – but the honest one. Read this page-turner to find out what happens next!

If you liked Lu, you should try reading Ghost, the first book in the track series by Jason Reynolds.  These book are similar because of the way they are written. Both Ghost and Lu are written like the main character would talk, and it gives a personal spin or opinion on their problems.  Ghost is about Castle, a kid in his teens, who also likes track.  He is dealing with family problems, and ever since his dad threatened his mother with a gun, he started running – running from himself.  He tends to act on things quickly, and seems to get himself in more trouble when he shoplifts running shoes from a local store. Will he get out and over his family problems?  Will he be found out for stealing the shoes? Read Ghost by Jason Reynolds to find out!
