Culture of Readers Journey October

During November on our Culture of Readers Journey, we are getting a lot done.  It seemed to zoom by as we were put in groups to identify our problems around the school.  I was put in a group with one of my friends, so I look forward to Culture of Readers time so I can collaborate with him.  We saw that around the school, kids want to know newly released books.  We also noticed that this problem affected all grades, especially 4th, 5th, and 6th.  We want to do a mock Newbery award for our school so we can promote newly released books.  And so on to our collection of data.  It was hard to find the right target population for our collection of data, but trough many group conversations, we decided on a survey and a questionnaire.  We surveyed a student from each class in the upper elementary grades (4,5,6), and did a questionnaire for the one teacher from each grade, including the librarian.  At first, we didn’t get all our responses, and we had to nag at teachers and students to take our surveys.  We didn’t get every response, and eventually, we just had to go with what data we had.  As a group, we were all excited to look at our data.  We started our analysis  and found there was a big problem. Kids weren’t accessing the new books they wanted, and they didn’t know about most of the newest books.   Sharing a love of reading is important here at Hopewell, and through our data collection, we have found that kids aren’t reading new books with powerful messages.  We are currently finishing analyzing our data, and then we will be working to fix the problems with innovative ways to promote our Newbery Award.
